Character: Ivan

Ivan’s Journal

“I really wish I could have seen Abby and mother one last time but the path that she walks is impossible to ignore. I still remember the first time our father took us to the druid community, Abby lit up like it was the most amazing place she had ever seen. To her the druid village has always been her real home and deep down I have always known this was her path.   Although I will miss her this is the path that she was always meant to walk. I can’t really blame the druid elders for banning any communication with me, the druid seer did foretell a possible future where my visit would bring destruction to the community and it is not like a battle oracle and an ultra-peace loving druid community are a good match. All of my life people have talked about home as if it was some special place that magically makes everything better. My path has always been to wander the universe doing the will of the gods, except now it has gotten confusing.” Ivan contemplates quietly

Ivan looks over to the sleeping Hatsue and then watches as Olmas tries to calmly explain to Amieko that she should just keep her sword in the scabbard during the trip into the well of daemons. Ivan laughs to himself remembering a time when she was someone we all strived to catch up to in battle. Fate it seems has sent her down a different path and this time all that we can do is marvel at how she is able to take on the challenge of leading a country.

Ivan’s thoughts drift back to Abby “A least they said that they would let her have the travel journals where I wrote about the plants, animals, and landscape. Hopefully when we get back to the city there will be some time to pop over to Sandpoint for a couple of hours and drop off the journals. Now that grandfather is gone there really isn’t anyone I need to see, although it would be enjoyable to see the gulf once again. “

“While we are there I need to make sure Hatsue tries the bacon. It will be interesting to see what she thinks of western food. I wonder how she will handle being the one that is different from everyone else, Will anyone even suspect that she is form Minki. I am not sure if there isn’t more than a few people that even know that Minki exists. Hatsue might think we come from Barbarians when she learns that most people have never even heard of Shogi. Of course Hatsue may not even be interested in going to Sandpoint with me.”

Ivan looks back over at Olmas and suspects he is having a conversation with Suishen “I wonder what they are discussing. Going by Olmas’s expression it looks like Suishen is winning the argument.  Suishen should really be grateful that Olmas has been so accepting of his annoying traits. It takes a special person to be able to put up with all of the shit that comes out of Suishen. Although before we found him Suishen did spend a lot of years by himself. I can imagine it would be really hard to be side lined for so many decades. It looks as if fate has brought the two of them together and provided both of them with exactly what each of them needed. It looks like they were meant to walk the path together.”

Looking over to Radella Ivan ponders “I really hope she can find a dragon to destroy the amulet before it takes her over. I wonder how such an item even could get created. “

Ivan quickly looks around to make sure neither Kali nor Dasi are paying attention “I have to be careful if ether one of them even suspects I am curious about the amulet they will explain it to me in detail. That’s 2 hours of my life that I would have regretted. Oh good it looks like they have no clue that I was curious about the amulet. I have noticed that with those two it is very dangerous to act like you are interested, they can go on for hours and hours.”

Sunday, 23 Sarenith

As we descend yet again, my mind absently turned to Kasimir.  I remember thinking how much he would enjoy this journey, with wide open plains to run through and the occasional enemy to run down and kill.  A battle horse does need his play, after all.

And now he is safe in a fort many miles away.  If he were here, I’m sure he would not relish the idea of floating, sliding, or climbing down a waterfall to meet our next opponent.  I feel almost like I misrepresented our quest to him … but then how was I to know …

Reaching the bottom we saw a boat tied to the shore, an island out in a pond and something else, maybe more islands, beyond that.  Hah.  A boat tied to the shore.  Might as well have a loaf of bread on a table with a sign next to it:  Eat me.  Hah.  Who would fall for that?

There is a trail to the east, leading into a small chamber.  Radella scouted ahead and discovered a dark chamber that, well, seemed unnaturally dark.  As a test, Zos sent in a tengu with a sun rod … and the sun rod looked considerably dim.  Some sort of magical darkness was in there.  As I got closer,  something up near the ceiling just, I don’t know, exuded confusion.  I seemed the only one affected, but Dasi dispelled it for me as quickly as it appeared.

Bows came out and we started shooting.  Naturally, Ivan stuck it with all his marvelous arrows, bringing it down.  Nightwing, they called it.  Once within sword range, Radella and I attacked it with vigor, with me taking the honors with the killing blow.  Unfortunately,  before it died, it called in two greater shadows .. strength-draining creatures I was not happy to see.  With the nightwing dead, Radella killed one shadow and then we simply backed off to a safe place and waited for the summoning spell to expire.

The next room held a corpse and a black throne. There was a dim glow from the ceiling.  A crown lay on the throne.

Zos sent in a tengu minion to retrieve the body.  As expected, that action triggered a reaction, and a ghostly lich appeared to go after the minion.  Stoic and dedicated in his task, the tengu picked up the corpse and returne it to us, ignoring the magic missiles that pummelled it.

Kali summoned some sort of angel to protect us (and the minion), and between its attacks and mine and Radella’s, it was, well, er, not dead but, I guess, gone.  In leaving, it cackled that it would be back.  That sounds ominous … maybe a flack-tree involved?  Liches often have those …

So, ironically, it seemed we’d have to get down and take the boat to visit the islands after all.  But before we could do that, up popped some water elementals and some horned devils; I’m not sure who summoned who.  A bit of chain lightning from Kali, and some sharp blows by Suishen and Raadella, and they were removed as obstacles.  Onward to another small chamber, where …

… we ultimately found our two final foes standing near some sort of portal.  Emperor Nobinoru  tried to capture Kali’s soul  … yeah, just that casually.  And Kali Just That Casually threw it off.   Small woman.  Big package.

Once Radella and I got within sword range, we killed him and his ugly companion.  Yeah, pretty much just like that.  I think it took us each maybe three blows.  Soooo glad that we have Kali and sometimes Ivan to blunt the magic.   Seems that most evil undead sorcerors or demons still don’t have a good answer for a sharp sword, if we can get to them.  Once both were dead, the portal seemed to close on its own.

After all that, we only recovered one thing: [777] +2 quarterstaff.  Perhaps now we can finally return to the surface!

Character: Kali

Kali’s Journal, Sarenith 23, 4713 (part 3)

Sarenith 23, 4713 (morning, Well of Demons)

Sokai had warned us that Maemi’s handmaiden—that would make her the handmaiden’s handmaiden, a level of recursion that I can appreciate—was a trained assassin when she was alive. Now that she’s dead, and trapped in here along with Maemi and everyone else, she had little to do but hone her skills. Quoting Sokai again, “Death gives her time to practice.”

Most of that practice seems to be done on hezrous. I base that on how quickly the first two of them died. While this does make our job easier long-term, we were hoping they would contribute more directly to the proceedings.

Not that I should be complaining too much. The erinyes could see those of us who were hiding behind invisibility (which was inconvenient, to say the least), but the handmaiden could not. So, the hezrou were her only obvious targets when the assault began. Sometimes, things just go your way. After she killed the second one with a single blow, we figured out where she was hiding—which was, astonishingly, in plain sight—and I lit her up with some magical glitter. It was an appalling fashion statement, but sometimes you have to go with what works.

The key to defeating an opponent is to play your strengths against their weaknesses. In the assassin’s case, she bet it all on not being seen, and once we deprived her of that advantage her options were limited to which one of us would kill her. She had a few tricks left, sure, but none of them played well against a barrage of arrows. By the time Ivan was done with her she looked like a hawthorn tree.

The third of our hezrou “allies” had administered a severe beating to the remaining erinyes so their defensive line, if you want to call it that, shattered as soon as we hit it. Maemi, herself, seemed to realize early on that she was in trouble, and she tried in vain to strike some bargain that would keep her alive. Sorry, lady. Not interested. Are there any scenarios where making a deal with a literal devil works out in your favor?

If I’m being honest here—and what’s the point of writing in this thing if I’m not being honest—I have to admit I don’t understand the whole tizzy around Maemi’s presence in the Well. Amatatsu Onoko played her up as this horrible figure, but really, what did she do? According to Dasi, she struck a bargain with Hell to extend her life. Big fucking deal. Yeah, okay, back when she was on the throne maybe those 200 years were something of a bummer, but even the worst Suishen had to say about her was that she put herself ahead of throne and empire. So what? That just makes her a crappy leader. Compare that to her next-door neighbor, Teikoku Sokai, who instituted a eugenics program and forced the lesser nobles of Minkai into slavery. On that scale, Maemi doesn’t even register.

(mid-morning, Well of Demons)

There’s this spell that impairs your mental functioning to the point where you’re not capable of rational thought or reasoning. That spell is basically my worst nightmare since rational thought and reasoning is pretty much all I do, and it’s why I’ve been wearing this ring for the past several months. It has that spell inside of it, and if that same spell is cast on me then the one stored in the ring immediately counters it.

Today it finally happened, and I have never been so grateful to have planned ahead.

From that, you might gather that Sokai was less than thrilled with our betrayal. And you would be correct. My only regret is that he didn’t survive long enough to really bask in it.

We’ve searched everywhere and there’s no sign of Shigure’s body, and that tells us that it probably washed downstream into the caverns below. What’s down there? No idea. We can see an underground lake and not much else. I’m taking bets though. Our experience up here was almost literally going through Hell and the Abyss, so I am putting my money on Abaddon to round out the set. Though that does leave us one or two royal families short, assuming that the Well is a whole thing.

(late morning)

Instead of daemons we got undead, though there’s still more to do here so my theory may yet pan out. And undead does seem to fit the theme of “things that happen to vile people after they die.”

And speaking of vile, allow me to introduce Shojinawa Ito. According to Dase, as emperor he bolstered Minkai’s army by creating undead from the soldiers who died in battle, and then disguised them behind illusions so that they looked like normal people. Eventually, his military commanders noticed that something was off, and he addressed their concerns by giving them the same treatment. The only thing he couldn’t hide was his unnaturally long life, courtesy of becoming a lich. His reign was finally ended by a sovereign dragon who had apparently had enough of his antics.

If that charming personality wasn’t enough, he was also holding on to Shigure’s corpse because why not. I guess that obsession with death and bodies has really stuck.

We didn’t even bother talking to him. I mean, what would have been the point? It was already a long morning and there was no reason to drag it out.

He also seemed unconcerned about his eventual destruction, going so far as to announce to us that he’d be back. That’s not how this works, ghost or not. But, on the other hand, he did seem pretty sure of himself so I don’t think we can rule it out. Assuming the lich story is true, his phylactery must have been destroyed or he wouldn’t be here at all, but maybe he has something else that ties his spirit to the Well, or to the shrine or island in general.

Of course, that is easy to say. The real trick would be finding it.

(even later morning)

I am lucky to be alive. Extraordinarily lucky.

There was this moment in Nobinuro’s cave where he did something, and I saw a flash of light through the cloud of fog around me. There was this sudden chill, and…I am not sure how to describe this, but it felt like tug at my soul. As if it were being ripped from my body.

I didn’t even have time to panic. Out of sheer instinct, I held on to it with…I don’t even know what. My will? My sense of being? Whatever it is that anchors us to this existence, it held. But only just.

Later, we deduced that Nobinoru was a thanadaemon. They trap the souls of others in gemstones, which they can crush to restore their life force. This is when I felt the bottom drop out, and a horrible wave of sickness washed over me. There are some deaths that cannot be undone.

In life, Nobinoru was the last emperor from the Sugimatu family. So great was his ego that he ordered the end of his family line so that his achievements would never be surpassed. His most loyal samurai set out on this task, exterminating each and every descendant and relative until almost none remained. Only the intervention of the other four families stopped this senseless slaughter, but so many had been killed that the family line never recovered. And, of course, the Five Storms later finished what he had started.

But it’s done. We have scoured the Well of every trace of demon, devil, daemon, and undead, and in the process have prevented the worst of the royal families from offering their counsel or blessing to future emperors. Something that the world simply does not need.

Character: Kali

Kali’s Journal, Sarenith 23, 4713 (part 2)

Sarenith 23, 4713 (morning, Well of Demons)

Our second run at the well was considerably more successful than our first. This time we could prepare our defenses and devise a strategy before finding ourselves dodging blobs of acid, resisting telekinetic shoves, and worrying about who was suffocating. This is the sort of pertinent combat advice that I like to share here, as your time is valuable and you should get value for it in return.

This was about the perfect setup for omoxes: water everywhere, a one-hundred-and-fifty-foot drop to get to it, and a waterfall so loud you can’t think with no way to turn it off. Whoever put them here knew what they were doing. We generally deal with oni, so that’s not something we see a lot of.

So far, the Well of Demons has not disappointed when it comes to names but that is about all it has going for it. Unless your tastes for interior decorating run towards dark and dank. According to Onoko, this is where the less savory emperors of Minkai are allowed to manifest, just in case some future degenerate feels the need to commune with them. Though, personally, I think allowing that is an extraordinarily bad idea. It should really be the acid test for claiming the throne. Like, if you feel the need to come down here for advice, maybe you shouldn’t be on it. But no one asked me for input when they set this whole thing up.

Onoko wasn’t exaggerating when she said something is amiss down here; the omoxes were not mere manifestations, and neither were their hezrou buddies. The obvious question is, how did they get here? Followed closely by, who are “they”? Last time I checked, demons and devils don’t have a strong working relationship. If Maemi is in here, and she’s one of the latter, then who brought the former?

(slightly later morning, Well of Demons)

I have to write quickly as we are moving soon.

The answer to at least one of my questions is “Teikoku Sokai”. According to Dasi, he was one of the first and worst autocrats of Minkai, who preferred the title “shogun” over “emperor”. I am sure that says quite a lot about his management style. It’s certainly in line with his charming personality. He had enough ego for all of us.

We’ve allied with him temporarily because his narcissism is exceeded only by his hatred of Maemi. Why does he hate Maemi? Who knows? Who cares?

The situation is this: she holds the north end of the cavern, and he holds the south. Gids, it’s the damned House of Withered Blossoms all over again, only this time the warring sides are fire-retardant.

The idiot thinks we’re here because his family has finally risen to power and we’re here to pay deference to him. Sometimes it’s like we don’t even have to try. When we told him we were here to kill Maemi, he naturally assumed that was the whole truth. We conveniently left out the part where he’s next on the list.

He’s lending us three hezrou for the assault. I am sure they’ll turn on us as soon as Maemi and her erinyes are evicted, so it’s in our best interest to ensure they die for the cause.

It’s time to go.

Character: Olmas

The Annals of the Order of the Dragon

as told by the cavalier Olmas Lurecia himself.

Sunday, 23 Sarenith

Maemi, it turns out, was up on a 40′ high ledge, back away from the edge. It is unfortunate for her that she underestimated the damage we might do. She sent a few more erinyes after us, and these seemed overly fond of unholy blight. One sickened me for a bit, but I was able to maintain my focus enough to make it pay for that with its life.

Black tentacles sprang up to hinder our path to Maemi, but airwalk made that no hinderance at all.

The main instrument of destruction were “the usual suspects”; that is to say, Ivan’s arrows, my and Radella’s swords, Dasi’s songs, Kali’s spells (I swear she learns a new one every hour of the day!) and I wouldn’t want to overlook (heh) Zos’s equally impressive list of thrown bombs. We took out three erinyes just as Maemi summoned three more. Kali, that practical joker, had thrown up a very practical invisible wall of force in front of Maemi, and she was forced to suddenly place her summoned creatures at her elbow 🙂 The look on her face was priceless as she realized for the first time she might be outmatched.

15 seconds later Radella and I battled to deliver the killing blow, at Maemi’s expense. Radella took the honors, but Maemi took all the damage. We cleaned up the remaining erinyes, and gathered up loot.

There was not much. Being demons, they had little use for worldly possessions. We did collect, however, 7 more of

[760] longsword
[761] composite longbow (+5 str), flaming
[762] rope
[763] 7×20=140 arrows

and

[765] major crown of blasting
[766] jewelry and fine clothing worth 1000’s of gp

After a quick discussion, we decided to return to Sokai ceremonially, but then after marching up to him with Maemi’s corpse as requested, and then simply strike him down as well. A bit bold, perhaps, but we couldn’t think of another way to use the ruse to any better advantage.

His hezrou assistant was there when Zos’s tengus walked in carrying the body with us just in front announcing “it’s done” even as we attacked. Sokai had looked a little unusual like there was some sort of spell cast on him that made him or parts of him appear indistinct. That ended immediately as he became much larger with a decidedly non-human body. Fine. Easier to hit. 10 seconds later he was dead.

The hezrou took longer, but only because we focused on Sokai first. It fell quickly too, once attention turned to him. This level, so far as we knew, was clear of evil. We recovered

Soka
[767] robe of blending
[768] obsidian steed figurine of wondrous power
[769] ornate gold and jade ring (not magic)

I have taken custody of the figurine, at least until we return to town and sell it.

We took a moment to heal wounds, mostly with the wand of healing, and then … we will descend THIS waterfall and see what else awaits us.
